In 2019, 5,765 Germans immigrated to Turkey officially. In the 10 years from 2008 to 2017, 56,497 Germans immigrated to Turkey officially. In addition, many spend the mild winter here every year. Turkey is both a country of emigration and a country of emigration. Especially after 1989, many immigrants from the Balkans, Greece, the Middle East, Iran, Central Asia and the Crimea came to the republic. Recently, a large number of displaced people came from the Syrian civil war. The people of Turkey are open and hospitable to most foreigners.
Germans usually settle in well-known resorts on Turkey's Aegean coast (Izmir, Marmaris, Datça and Bodrum) or on the Turkish Riviera (Antalya and Alanya). In Alanya alone, more than 6,000 Germans have a "Deed", that is, a certificate of ownership. Most are used as holiday homes, but some are also permanently inhabited. Many Germans currently live in Turkey on a residence permit - most are entrepreneurs and retirees.
The national and official language of Turkey is Turkish. In addition, there are about twenty other languages spoken by minorities, chief among them Kurmanji or Northern Kurdish, with around 14 million speakers. In tourist centers and in Istanbul, you can communicate in most of the particularly common European foreign languages, including English and German. In general, it is an advantage to have at least one dictionary with you to better understand or even know the most important Turkish words.
Although Turkey's summers are mostly dry, it has sufficient humidity for a green landscape with many forests. On the Black Sea coast there are enough rainy days. The interior of the country has a dry continental climate characterized by hot and dry summers and cold, snowy winters. The Marmara region is the smallest but most populous region in the northwest, with its rich Byzantine and Ottoman history and the Bosphorus city of Istanbul. Central Anatolia is characterized by a treeless steppe landscape, as well as the hiking paradise of the capital Ankara and Cappadocia.
The Aegean region is home to the Aegean Sea's seaside resorts, as well as Greek and Roman ruins and olive groves. The Mediterranean region is characterized by mountains, pine forests and clear waters of the Mediterranean. Turkey's Black Sea region offers numerous forests and mountains for hiking and winter sports, as well as seaside resorts on the coast and hazelnut and tea plantations further east. Southeastern Anatolia is characterized by a steppe climate with cold winters and hot and dry summers. Eastern Anatolia, with Mount Ararat, is the most mountainous region of the country.
